Mattress Protector: Is It Worth It and How to Choose
Partilhar
The mattress protector is the cheapest item on the bed and the one that buys the mattress the most time. It costs between 29 € and 59 €, and it is what sits between your body and an investment of 700 € or 1500 €. I get this question almost every week: is it really worth it? It is — and here is exactly why, and how to choose one.
What a protector does
Three things, in order of importance:
- A barrier against moisture. The body perspires between 200 ml and half a litre a night, even in winter. Without a protector, that moisture goes into the foams and the springs, where it does not dry and cannot be cleaned.
- A barrier against dust mites. Dust mites feed on skin cells and thrive in a damp environment. A protector washable at 40 °C removes their habitat.
- A barrier against spills. A glass of water, a child's accident, a pet. Without a protector, the stain stays on the mattress and typically voids the warranty.
What a protector does not do
It does not change the firmness of the mattress. It does not correct a mattress that has already sagged. It does not replace a mattress topper — to change the feel of lying down, what is needed is a mattress topper, not a protector.
And it does not last forever. The waterproof layer degrades with washing. Replace it every 18 months.
“Waterproof” does not mean plastic
It is the objection I hear most: I had a waterproof protector once and it was noisy, it was hot, it made me sweat. They did. The old ones were a sheet of PU over a thin fabric.
Current ones have the barrier underneath and a textile face on top. What touches the skin is cotton, terry or Tencel. The barrier stays invisible in the inner layer. If there is still a plastic sound when turning over, the protector is an old one — replace it.
The three Dreamura protectors
| Model | Textile face | From | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tsuwano | Terry (brushed cotton) | 29 € | A firm mattress to be softened; children's bedrooms |
| Kirishima | 100% cotton | 39 € | Daily use, homes with children, a neutral sheet-like feel |
| Kanazawa | 100% Tencel | 49 € | Anyone who overheats at night, allergies, high-end mattresses |
Tsuwano (津和野) is a Japanese hot-spring town — it is the cosiest of the three, and the texture is noticeable. Kirishima (霧島) is a mountain range of soft mist — it is the most discreet, much like a sheet. Kanazawa (金沢) is the city of gardens and attention to detail — it is the one that breathes best.
How to choose in 30 seconds
- Overheating at night, or allergies? Kanazawa. Tencel absorbs more moisture and breathes better than cotton.
- Want the essentials done well, without paying for technical fibre? Kirishima. It is the one I suggest in most cases.
- Is the mattress too firm and a softer touch is wanted? Tsuwano.
- Is it for a child's bedroom? Tsuwano or Kirishima — both take frequent washing.
One note: in Lisbon or the Algarve, where the bedroom heats up in summer, avoid terry. It is warmer than the other two.
The right size
The protector follows the size of the mattress, not the bed. The elastics on all three models adjust to mattresses from 14 to 30 cm high, which covers practically the whole range — including the Takumi, which is 26 cm.
If the mattress size is uncertain, measure it before ordering. The full chart of sizes used in Portugal is here.
Care
- Wash once or twice a month, at 40 °C (the Kirishima takes 60 °C).
- Air dry or tumble dry on low. High heat degrades the waterproof barrier.
- Do not iron the inner face.
- Replace every 18 months.
The three mistakes I see most
- Buying the mattress and leaving the protector for later. The mattress is exposed precisely in the first weeks, while the decision to keep it is still being made.
- Using the same protector for five years. The textile face looks fine, but the barrier is no longer there.
- Washing at 90 °C to “disinfect”. It destroys the waterproof layer in one go.
Frequently asked questions
Does the protector replace the waterproof underlay?
Yes. Protector and underlay are the same item — the name changes from region to region.
Do I need a protector if I have a new mattress under warranty?
Even more so. Mattress warranties, including ours of 10 years, do not cover stains, moisture or odours. A protector is what keeps the warranty valid.
Can I put the protector over the mattress topper?
Yes, and that is what I recommend when both are in use. The order is: mattress, topper, protector, sheet.
Does it make a difference for people with allergies?
It does. An anti-dust-mite barrier combined with monthly washing at 40-60 °C greatly reduces the allergen load of the bed. If the symptoms persist, speak to your doctor — the protector helps, it does not treat.
How long does it last?
18 months of protective function with daily use. The fabric lasts longer, but the barrier does not.
In short
For a mattress that cost several hundred euros with no protector on it, this is the 39 € purchase with the best return on the bed. If the current one is more than two years old, it is time to replace it.
