Mattress sizes in Portugal: complete measurement chart

In Portugal, mattress sizes are written the opposite way round to what many people expect: length first, then width. A 190×140 mattress is 190 cm long and 140 cm wide. It is the same mattress as 140×190, but Portuguese retailers almost always use the first form.

This page brings together the sizes in circulation on the Portuguese market, the common name for each one, and the amount of bedroom space each one requires. The Takumi is available in 10 sizes, from 190×90 to 200×200, manufactured in Portugal. For the choice of firmness and material, the starting point is the complete guide to choosing the right mattress.

Mattress size chart for Portugal

Size Common name Who it is for
190×90 Single One person up to around 1.75 m
190×105 Single XL One person with more lateral space
190×135 Double Two people, small bedroom
190×140 Standard Double Two people. The best-selling size in Portugal
190×150 Queen Two people with room to spare
200×90 Single One person over 1.80 m
200×140 Standard Double Two people, one of them over 1.80 m
200×160 Queen Two people, spacious bedroom
200×180 King Two people, spacious bedroom
200×200 Super King Two people plus children or pets

The ten sizes above refer to the Takumi, which is 26 cm high. The other models in the range vary between 20 and 26 cm and not all of them exist in the ten sizes. The full range is under all mattresses.

190 or 200 cm in length?

The practical rule: the person's height plus 15 cm. Someone of 1.80 m is a tight fit on a 190 cm mattress. Above 1.85 m, the 200 cm is no longer a matter of comfort.

Length also determines the bed linen. A 190 fitted sheet does not fit a 200 mattress.

Single, double, queen, king: what each name means here

The names are not standardised. They vary from brand to brand and do not match the English or American sizes carrying the same name. What matters is the width:

  • 90 cm — single. One person.
  • 105 cm — single XL. One person with more space, or teenagers' bedrooms.
  • 135 to 140 cm — double. Two people. 190×140 is the most common size in Portugal.
  • 150 to 160 cm — queen. Two people with room to turn over without touching.
  • 180 cm — king.
  • 200 cm — super king.

An American queen size measures 152×203 cm and does not correspond to any Portuguese size. Imported bed linen rarely fits.

Which size fits the bedroom

The circulation rule is 60 cm clear on each side of the bed and at the foot. Below 50 cm, walking past the bed becomes uncomfortable day to day.

In a bedroom 3 metres wide, a 160 mattress leaves 70 cm on each side. A 180 leaves 60. A 200 leaves 50 and forces one side against the wall.

Before ordering, also measure the bedroom door and the route in. Mattresses 180 and 200 cm wide do not pass through narrow staircases without being tilted.

How to choose the right width

The rule I use on the phone is simple: lie on your back and cross your hands behind your head, elbows open. If the elbows go past the edge of the mattress, more width is needed.

For a couple, 140 cm gives 70 cm per person — less than the width of a single mattress. Sharing with someone who moves a lot, or with children and pets coming in during the morning, a queen (160) or king (180) changes the night completely.

If you are hesitating between two sizes, choose the larger one. Nobody complains about having too much space — but everybody complains about having too little. — Ana Cristina, Dreamura Sleep Adviser

Does the mattress have to be the same size as the bed base?

Yes. The mattress should rest on the full base, with no gap and no overhang. A 5 cm difference makes the mattress slide with use and wears the edges out sooner.

Bed bases follow the same sizes as the mattresses. The Sendai, with front opening and interior storage, is available in 4 colours and can be seen in the bed bases with storage collection.

Sizes not in this chart

Antique beds, French slatted bases or bedrooms with awkward proportions do not always fit the standard sizes. In those cases we make made-to-measure mattresses, with the same construction and the same firmness levels as the range.

Which bed linen for each size

The fitted sheet follows the size of the mattress and its height. A 26 cm mattress requires a sheet with a pocket of at least 30 cm, otherwise it comes off the corners.

The duvet cover follows the duvet, not the mattress. On a double bed, the most widely used duvet in Portugal is 240×220 cm.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of a double mattress in Portugal?

190×140 cm. It is the best-selling size. The 190×135 appears in smaller bedrooms, and the 200×140 in homes where someone is over 1.80 m.

Are 190×140 and 140×190 the same mattress?

They are. Only the order of writing changes. In Portugal the length is written first.

Does a 200×160 mattress fit a 190×150 bed base?

No. The mattress and the base have to be the same size.

Which size to choose for two adults?

140 cm wide is the comfortable minimum: each person gets 70 cm, less than a single mattress. From 160 cm upwards, one person's movement stops waking the other.

Do 200×200 mattresses need special sheets?

They need a 200×200 fitted sheet. It is not a rare size, but it is less common in general retailers.

Do you make mattresses in non-standard sizes?

Yes. For antique beds, French slatted bases or awkward bedrooms, we make made-to-measure mattresses, with the same construction and firmness levels as the range.

Size settled, firmness still to go

There are ten sizes. The size solves the space; the firmness solves the body. If the right one is still unclear, the mattress quiz takes two minutes.
