Best Mattress for Couples: How to Choose (2026 Guide)

I'm Ana Cristina, Dreamura's Sleep Advisor. When two people sleep together, the mattress is no longer an individual decision. Different weights, different positions, different schedules — all of this needs to be taken into account. This guide helps you choose without compromising either person's sleep.

Before you proceed, it's worth reading our complete guide to choosing the ideal mattress. Here, I'll focus on what changes when a bed is shared.

What changes when two people sleep together

A mattress for couples needs to solve three things simultaneously: isolate motion, support two weights without sinking in the middle, and accommodate two sleep positions that are rarely the same.

If one person moves and the other wakes up, the problem is almost always the same: the mattress transfers motion from one side to the other.

Motion isolation: start here

Motion isolation is the mattress's ability to absorb movement on one side without transferring it to the other.

Pocket springs are best at this. Each spring works individually, within its fabric pocket. When one of you turns over, the spring underneath responds — the ones on the other side remain still.

A foam mattress also isolates motion but tends to sleep hotter. For couples, I usually suggest pocket springs for better ventilation.

When you have different firmness preferences

This is the most common scenario: one prefers firmer, the other softer.

Medium firmness resolves most of these cases — it's the meeting point where both sleep well without either having to compromise too much.

If there's a significant weight difference between you (more than 30 kg), medium-firmness provides better support for the heavier side without making the other uncomfortable. For the specific case of opposite preferences and very different weights, I've written a separate guide: couple's mattress with different preferences.

Size: don't skimp here

The most common mistake couples make is choosing a small mattress.

  • A 140 cm wide mattress for a couple is the minimum.
  • If the room allows, 160x200 cm gives each person space to move without encroaching on the other.
  • 90 cm width per person is true comfort. Below that, you'll feel it.

My recommendations

  • Takumi — our top seller, and what I recommend for couples with different profiles. Pocket springs + memory foam + high resilience, 26 cm, medium firmness. The springs provide motion isolation; the memory foam adapts to each body. Made in Portugal.
  • Sora — pocket springs with three support zones, medium firmness, no memory foam. A good choice if both sleep on their side and prefer a cooler feel.
  • Mizu — pocket springs + high resilience, firmer and very well ventilated. For couples who like a firm, traditional feel.

If you want to see all three side-by-side, we have the Takumi vs Mizu vs Sora comparison.

“If you're torn between two models, start with the medium firmness. It's the one that suits the most different body types at once.” — Ana Cristina, Sleep Advisor
