Mattress for couples with different preferences: how to choose

One likes firm, the other soft. One sleeps on their side, the other on their back. One weighs 20 kilos more than the other. And they have to share the same mattress. It's one of the requests I receive most often.

I'm Ana Cristina, Dreamura's Sleep Advisor. The good news: almost all these cases can be resolved. I'll explain how.

First: motion isolation

If one person moves and the other feels it, the problem isn't firmness — it's motion transfer. Pocket spring mattresses isolate each point because each spring works independently. That's why I recommend pocket springs for light sleepers who share a bed. You'll stop waking up when your partner turns over.

Firmness: a middle ground solves most problems

When preferences are different but not opposite, a medium-firm mattress serves both better than any extreme. The Takumi is what I usually suggest: a hybrid of pocket springs and memory foam, medium firmness, 26 cm. It adapts to side sleepers and supports back sleepers — all on the same mattress.

When differences are significant: the mattress topper

If one truly needs firm and the other soft, there's a simple solution. Choose a firm mattress as the base and add a mattress topper only on the side of the person who wants more comfort. The Shizuka (5 cm) fine-tunes comfort; the Nemuke (8 cm) transforms a firm side into a cozy one. Each sleeps as they like, in the same bed.

Very different weights

Heavier people sink more. A hybrid mattress with a good support layer — springs plus high resilience — distributes weight better and prevents one side from sagging. For significant differences, the Takumi or the Samurai (firmer) better support the heavier side without compromising the lighter one.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really possible to reconcile opposite preferences in one mattress?
In most cases, yes. Medium firmness resolves small differences; for opposite tastes, a topper on one side gives each person the feel they prefer.

Spring or foam for couples?
Pocket springs, if you're a light sleeper — they isolate movement much better than foam alone. The Takumi combines both.

Can I put a topper on only one side?
You can. It's the simplest way to give one person more comfort without affecting the other's side.

What about pillows?
Each person should have their own, depending on their sleeping position. See the guide the couple's pillow.
