What it does: adds a layer of comfort to the surface. It softens a mattress that is too firm, eases pressure on the shoulder and hip, and extends the life of the mattress underneath, because that mattress now takes the wear.
What it does not do: it does not fix the structure. If the mattress has already sagged in the middle and has a visible dip where the body rests, a layer on top follows that dip instead of correcting it — and the feeling of improvement lasts only a few months. In that case, what solves it is a new mattress.
The simple test: take off the sheets and look at the mattress from the side, at eye level. If the surface line is straight, a topper solves it. If it is curved, it does not.
