How to Choose the Right Bed Base (2026 Guide)

The bed base does half the mattress's job, and almost no one thinks about it. It's the foundation that supports the mattress, defines the ventilation underneath, and, in many cases, the firmness you feel. If your mattress is good but you sleep poorly, the base might be the cause.

This guide shows you how to choose the right bed base for your mattress and your bedroom.

The three types of bed bases

  • Fixed slatted: the most common base. Wooden slats that air out the mattress and provide firm support. Good value for money.
  • Adjustable slatted: allows you to adjust firmness in specific zones (shoulders, lumbar). Useful if you have localized pain.
  • Storage box base: a closed base that opens to store bedding. You gain space in a small room.

Ventilation: why it matters

A mattress perspires. Without air underneath, moisture gets trapped, leading to dust mites and odors. A slatted base with space allows the mattress to breathe from both sides. If you have a spring or memory foam mattress, base ventilation prolongs its life.

Matching the bed base with the mattress

The simple rule: the heavier the mattress, the more robust the base. A 26 cm pocket spring mattress needs firm and uniform support. Slats that are too far apart will cause the mattress to sag in the middle and wear out prematurely.

If you're replacing your mattress, it's worth reviewing the base at the same time. A new mattress on an old, sagging base will last less.

Height and the rest of the bedroom

The height of the set (bed base plus mattress) changes comfort when getting in and out of bed. For most adults, a mattress surface between 50 and 60 cm from the floor is comfortable. Add the height of the bed base to that of the mattress before deciding.

If you're adding a headboard, check for compatibility of measurements. See Dreamura headboards.

In summary

Choose based on ventilation, the support your mattress requires, and the height that suits you. If you lack storage, a box bed base solves two problems at once.
