How long does a mattress last? What to expect (and when to replace it)

A mattress does not last forever. Over time, the materials give way and stop providing the support you need. The question I am asked most often on the phone is simple: how long does a mattress last? The short answer is between 7 and 10 years. But it depends on the type and on how you look after it.

How long a mattress lasts, on average

A quality mattress lasts between 7 and 10 years. That is the window in which most materials keep their support and hygiene. After that, the structure begins to lose firmness, even if it looks the same from the outside.

At Dreamura, mattresses come with a 10-year warranty. It is also the reference I use when people ask how long to expect a well-made mattress to last.

Lifespan depends on the type

Not all mattresses age at the same rate. The material inside decides almost everything.

  • Pocket springs: 8 to 10 years. Each spring works independently and takes longer to lose tension. This is the case with the Takumi (匠, master craftsman), which combines springs with memory foam.
  • Memory foam and high resilience (HR): 7 to 9 years. Good-density foam recovers well, but loses responsiveness with daily use. The Hisui, in HR and memory foam, fits here.
  • Low-density foam: 5 to 7 years. It gives way sooner and marks more easily.
  • Baby mattress: replaced sooner, for hygiene and because of growth. Typically every 5 years or between children.

Signs that it is time to replace it

Age is one indicator, but your body is the best one. Look out for these signs:

  • You wake up with back or neck pain that eases through the day.
  • You see or feel a dip where you sleep.
  • You hear the springs or the mattress feels uneven.
  • You sleep better in a hotel bed or at someone else's home.
  • More than 8 years have passed since you bought it.

If two or more of these apply, your mattress is no longer supporting you as it should.

Note: if back pain is persistent and does not ease when you change mattress, speak to your doctor. Not all pain comes from the bed.

How to make your mattress last longer

A few simple habits gain you an extra year or two:

  • Rotate the mattress every 3 months, head to foot, to spread the wear.
  • Use a mattress protector. It protects against moisture and dust mites without changing the feel, and it is what keeps the warranty valid.
  • Air the bedroom and the mattress in the morning before making the bed.
  • Make sure the base is firm. A bed base or slatted base in good condition prevents the mattress from sagging sooner.

Most people replace their mattress too late. Do not wait for it to fall apart. If you no longer wake up rested, the mattress has served its time.
