Dormideo cot mattress alternative: price, density and certification

Dormideo is one of the first brands that comes up when you search for a cot mattress in Portugal. The BabyBed costs 46,23 € in the standard 60x120 size — less than half of our cheapest baby mattress. This article explains what sits behind that difference, and which numbers are worth confirming before buying any cot mattress.
I am writing this as Dreamura's Sleep Advisor, and Dreamura sells baby mattresses. So I will start with what Dormideo has and we do not.
Three things where Dormideo is ahead
1. The price, and it is not a small gap
The BabyBed costs 46,23 € in 60x120. Our Kotone costs 99 € in the same size. That is more than double, and there is no point dressing it up. If the budget is tight — and with a baby on the way it usually is — that difference counts.
2. More sizes
Dormideo sells the BabyBed in three sizes: 50x80, 60x120 and 70x140. We have two, 118x58 and 120x60, plus a 190x90 version for when the child moves to a larger bed. If the cot is 50x80 or 70x140, we have no answer and they do.
3. Many more reviews
The BabyBed page has 51 reviews, averaging 4,82 out of 5. Our Kotone has one. We are a newer brand in this segment and the number says what it says — far more people have confirmed their experience than ours.
Dormideo manufactures in Vinaroz, Castellón, in Spain, and states more than 25 years of activity. It is not an improvised brand.
The four numbers to confirm on any cot mattress
This applies to every brand, ours included. These are the points highlighted by DECO Proteste and by paediatric guidance generally.
1. Foam density — the number that expresses firmness
A cot mattress has to be firm, so that the baby's face does not sink into the surface. In foam mattresses, the number that expresses this is density, and the reference is 23 kg/m³ or higher.
At the date of this article, the BabyBed page describes the material as high-density HR foam but does not publish the value in kg/m³. Ask the brand before buying — it is information you are entitled to and that any manufacturer holds.
2. Fabric certification
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certifies that the textiles have been tested for substances harmful to the skin. It is the minimum to require of a product that stays in contact with a baby's skin every night.
At the date of this article, the Portuguese BabyBed page does not mention OEKO-TEX, CertiPUR or any health certificate. References to certifications appear in third-party listings, such as Amazon, but that is not the same as the brand stating it on the product page. Confirm it directly.
3. Removable, washable cover
In a cot, there is a lot of washing. A cover that comes off and goes in the machine is the difference between a mattress that stays hygienic for three years and one that does not. At the date of this article, the BabyBed page does not state whether the cover is removable or at what temperature it washes.
4. A fit with no gap
The standard size in Portugal and in Europe is 120x60 cm. The practical rule is that two fingers of space between the mattress and the rail is already too much. Measure the inside of the cot before buying, especially if it was handed down.
The small print on returns
The BabyBed page shows a 30-night trial badge. It is worth reading the exchanges and returns page before counting on it.
At the date of this article, that page states that return shipping costs are always paid by the customer, that returning a mattress costs 70 € and that exchanging it under the 30 nights costs 120 €. On a 46,23 € mattress, the exchange costs more than double the product.
There is also the shipping threshold: delivery is free from 60 € upwards, and below that it costs 6 €. The 60x120 BabyBed falls below the threshold.
At Dreamura, delivery is free in mainland Portugal with no minimum order, within five working days. The 100 nights of trial apply to adult mattresses, not to baby mattresses — on baby mattresses the statutory right of withdrawal applies, with the product unused.

The Dreamura baby range
Three mattresses, all with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified fabrics:
- Kotone — 8 cm, foam with a density of 23 kg/m³ or higher. Lasts until age 2 or 3. 99 € in 120x60. See Kotone.
- Suzu — 11 cm, same density, more height. Lasts until age 3. 109 € in 120x60. See Suzu.
- Mokuren — 12 cm, pocket springs. It lasts the longest: until age 5 or 6. 159 € in 120x60. See Mokuren.
If you do not have a cot yet, the Nekasu Cot meets the European standard EN 716, which sets the safety requirements for cots in domestic use — spacing between bars, side height, stability and strength. It has a non-toxic finish and an adjustable base, from 299 €.
So which one to choose
- If the budget decides, the BabyBed is cheaper, full stop. Ask the brand for the density in kg/m³ and the fabric certification before buying — if they give you both numbers, you are buying informed.
- If the cot is 50x80 or 70x140, Dormideo has those sizes and we do not.
- If you want the density and the certification published before you have to ask, the Kotone and the Suzu put both numbers on the page.
- If you want it to last until the toddler bed, the Mokuren goes to age 5 or 6 and is the only one of the three with pocket springs.
- If you really intend to use the trial period, read the return conditions of both brands. On a product at this price, the cost of returning can exceed the product.
On a cot mattress, what decides is not the brand or the price — it is whether it is firm, whether it fits with no gap and whether the fabrics have been tested. Two questions settle almost everything: what is the density in kg/m³, and do the textiles carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Ask those two questions of whoever you buy from.
