Best Mattress in 2026: How to Choose the Right One for You
Partilhar
You look for the best mattress of 2026 and you find lists that all say different things. The truth is simple: there is no single best mattress for everyone. There is the best one for you. What works for a side sleeper with lower back pain does not work for a stomach sleeper. In this guide I show you how to choose by your profile, not by someone else's ranking.
There is no "best mattress" — there is the best one for you
A mattress is something you will use 8 hours a night for 7 to 10 years. What decides whether it is good is not the brand at the top of a list. It is four things of your own: the position you sleep in, your weight, whether you have pain, and whether you sleep hot or share the bed. Start there.
The 4 factors that decide
- Sleep position: on your side you need more comfort at the shoulder and the hip; on your back you need firm, constant support; on your stomach you need a firmer mattress so the spine does not sink.
- Weight: the more weight, the more firmness you need in order to have support. Lighter people sink less and tolerate softer mattresses. The table by weight bracket is in mattress firmness by weight.
- Pain: lower back pain calls for support that keeps the spine aligned — typically firm to medium-firm. Hip or shoulder pain calls for some pressure relief.
- Temperature and couples: if you sleep hot, springs ventilate better than foam. For couples, pocket springs isolate movement — you do not feel the other person turning over.
The mattress types in 2026
Four technologies dominate the market. Each one has a profile:
- Pocket springs: each spring works on its own. Good support, good ventilation, good motion isolation. They last 8 to 10 years.
- Viscoelastic (memory): moulds to the body and relieves pressure. Warmer, suited to back sleepers or to those with pressure points.
- High resilience (HR): foam with fast response and good durability. Cooler than viscoelastic.
- Hybrid (springs + foam): combines the support of springs with the relief of foam. It is the most balanced type for most people.
If you want to go deeper into the difference, I wrote a guide on just that: spring mattress or viscoelastic.
How to choose by your sleep position
This is the most practical part. Notice the position you fall asleep in — that is the one that counts most.
- On your side: medium firmness, with some relief at the shoulder and the hip. A hybrid of springs with viscoelastic works well.
- On your back: medium to firm. You need constant support so the lumbar area does not give way.
- On your stomach: firm. Avoid very soft mattresses — the spine sinks and the lumbar area suffers.
The Dreamura range by profile
We have 11 mattresses in the range, all made in Portugal and with a 10-year warranty. Instead of telling you which is the "best", I map them to the profile:
- Takumi (匞, master craftsman): pocket springs + viscoelastic + high resilience, 26 cm, medium firmness. Our best seller. Good for mixed positions and for couples with different profiles. See Takumi.
- Hisui (翡翠, jade): HR + viscoelastic, firm, 26 cm. Designed for lower back pain and for back sleepers.
- Mizu (水, water): springs + HR, high firmness, 23 cm. For those who prefer the traditional firm feel and good ventilation.
- Sora (空, sky): springs + HR, medium firmness. For those who sleep mainly on their side. See Sora.
- Samurai (侍, guardian): springs + HR, high firmness. For those who need full support and have medium-to-high weight.
- Kumo (雲, cloud): HR, medium firmness, 20 cm. Entry point of the double range, from 149 €. A good option for a first home or for short-term rental.
If you want the side-by-side comparison of the three spring mattresses, it is here: Takumi vs Mizu vs Sora. And if you wake up with back pain, see the guide to the best mattress for lower back pain.
The right question is not "which is the best mattress?". It is "which is the best one for how I sleep?". Get the profile right and the rest sorts itself out.

How much a good mattress costs in 2026
A quality double mattress generally costs between 300 € and 900 €. Below 200 € you rarely find support that lasts. Above 1.500 € you are mostly paying for the brand. At Dreamura, the range goes from 115 € to 999 €, with payment in 3× interest free. You do not need to spend more to sleep well — you need to get the type right.
Test before you decide
No list replaces sleeping on the mattress. That is why all our mattresses come with 100 nights of trial at home. The body takes 2 to 3 weeks to adapt to a new mattress, so give it time before judging. If you do not adapt, you return it at no cost. Delivery is free in mainland Portugal, within 5 working days.
It also helps to know how long a mattress lasts — so you can tell when yours has had its time.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best mattress for back pain?
It is not the hardest one, contrary to what is often said. Lower back pain calls for support that keeps the spine aligned — typically medium to medium-firm, with a layer that relieves pressure at the hip and the shoulder. In the Dreamura range, the Hisui and the Samurai are the ones I usually suggest for that profile.
How much should a good mattress cost?
Between 300 € and 900 € for a double. Below 200 € you rarely find support that lasts. Above 1.500 € you are mostly paying for the brand. Divide the price by the real years of use — it is the only honest calculation.
Pocket springs or viscoelastic?
Pocket springs give better ventilation and isolate movement for couples. Viscoelastic moulds to the body and relieves pressure points, but it runs warmer. For most people, the hybrid — springs with a layer of memory foam — is the safest balance.
How long does a mattress last?
Between 7 and 10 years in daily use, depending on the density of the foams and the weight of the person sleeping on it. The sign to replace it is not age: it is visible sagging or waking up worse than when you lay down.
Note: if you have chronic back or neck pain that does not go away, speak to your doctor before deciding on a mattress. A good mattress improves alignment, but it does not replace clinical assessment.
