Back pain when you wake up? The chair isn't the culprit

It's 6 PM, you get up from your desk, and your body creaks like an old door. Tense neck, a knot between your shoulder blades, your lower back protesting. The conclusion is always the same: it's the chair's fault. So you buy the €400 ergonomic chair, the lumbar cushion, the app that beeps when you slouch. And it still hurts.

You've optimized to the millimeter the eight hours you spend sitting. And you've completely ignored the other eight hours you spend lying down.

The test that points to the real culprit

There's a simple question that separates the two suspects:

  • Is the pain worse in the morning, right after you wake up, and does it improve throughout the day? The problem is in your bedroom, not the office.
  • Does the pain start mild and worsen by the end of the workday? Then yes, look at your chair, posture, and breaks.

If you wake up already losing the game, the mattress is the first place to investigate. You spend a third of your life on it, and a mattress that has sagged in the middle pulls your spine out of alignment all night long.

Why your mattress does this

Almost all mattresses sag after eight to ten years. The foam softens, the central area sinks, and your spine is no longer straight when you lie down. You sleep bent without realizing it, and your muscles spend the night compensating. You wake up stiff.

The clearest sign is the hollow in the middle. Lie on your back and ask someone to look from the side: if your hips sink more than your shoulders and knees, the mattress no longer supports you.

The right firmness for your body

There's no "firmer mattress is better for your back" — that's a myth. The right firmness depends on how you sleep and your weight. If your pain is mainly in your lower back, I have a dedicated guide: the best mattress for lower back pain.

  • You sleep on your back and have lower back pain: you need firm support that maintains the natural curve of your spine. This is where I usually suggest the Hisui mattress — HR with viscoelastic foam, firm, designed specifically for lower back pain and back sleepers.
  • You sleep on your side: you need something that allows your shoulder and hip to sink a little, otherwise your spine will be crooked. Medium firmness, not firm.
  • Couple with different weights: a balanced medium-firmness mattress like the Takumi is usually the middle ground that works for both.

If you're not sure about your profile, the mattress quiz takes 2 minutes and tells you the right firmness. Or, if you prefer to talk to someone, I'll call you and we'll resolve it in 10 minutes — I'm Ana Cristina, Dreamura's sleep consultant.

How to be sure before spending

All Dreamura mattresses have a 100-night in-home trial. Back pain doesn't always disappear on the first night — the body takes time to adjust to proper alignment. I usually say to give it at least 14 days before judging. If it doesn't adapt, returns are free.

An important note: if the pain is constant, severe, or wakes you up at night, the next step isn't to change your mattress — it's to see a doctor. The right mattress solves mechanical discomfort; it doesn't replace a diagnosis.
