Should I change my mattress?

The quality of your mattress has a direct impact on your sleep and well-being. Over time, even the best mattresses wear out. Knowing how to recognise the signs that it’s time to replace your mattress can make all the difference in ensuring a good night's sleep. Below are several signs to look out for.
1. Discomfort and body aches
Waking up with pain in your back, neck, shoulders, or joints may indicate that your mattress no longer offers adequate support. Lack of support can affect body alignment and compromise sleep quality.
2. Visible deformations
Areas with loss of support or deformation are clear signs of wear. When the material sags in areas of greater pressure, such as the shoulders and hips, comfort and support are compromised.
3. Noises when moving
If your mattress creaks or makes noise every time you move, it could mean that the internal structure (such as springs or foam) is damaged. Besides being annoying, the noise can disturb your sleep.
4. Visible damage or signs of wear
Tears, holes, wear on the cover or unraveling seams are signs that the mattress is no longer in good condition. Even if it still seems comfortable, this damage affects hygiene and may indicate that the interior has also deteriorated.
5. Sensitivity to partner's movements
If you start to feel the movements of the person next to you more intensely, it is a sign that the mattress has lost its ability to isolate movement. This factor can impair the rest of both of you.
6. Allergies or irritations
Over time, mattresses accumulate dust mites and dust. If you start to notice sneezing, itching, or nasal congestion during the night or upon waking, the mattress may be contributing to these symptoms.
7. Feeling hot or excessive sweating
If you feel that the mattress retains too much heat, causing discomfort and perspiration, it may be a sign that the materials are no longer regulating temperature well.
8. Difficulty sleeping
If you have more difficulty falling asleep or wake up frequently during the night, the mattress may be contributing to this discomfort.
9. More than 8 years of use
The durability of a mattress varies depending on the materials and quality, but replacement is recommended after 7 to 10 years. Spring mattresses tend to last between 7 and 10 years. If your mattress has passed this period, it is likely that it no longer offers the same comfort and support.
The quality of your mattress directly influences your health and rest. If you have identified any of these signs, it may be time to consider replacing your mattress. Investing in a comfortable and quality mattress is investing in your well-being.
