Com a idade precisamos mesmo de dormir menos?

Do we really need to sleep less as we get older?

It's common to hear that as we age, we need less sleep. Many people believe that the body "gets used to" less sleep over the years. But is that true?

The relationship between age and sleep is more about changes in sleep structure than a reduced need for rest.

On average, adults still need about 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, although some people may experience rest differently. The feeling of sleeping less can arise because sleep becomes more fragmented and less deep, which can make the body feel like it recovers less.

Factors such as changes in biological rhythm, increased sensitivity to noise or light, and changes in daily habits can influence sleep quality with age.

The most important thing is not just the quantity of hours slept, but feeling that sleep is restorative. If you wake up tired, feel sleepy during the day, or have difficulty sleeping continuously, it may be helpful to reflect on your rest routine.

Aging does not mean we need less sleep. It just means that sleep can change, and that taking care of the quality of rest remains fundamental for maintaining energy and well-being.
